                                                       Godly Play

We invite you to bring your children ages 3 through 5th grade to Godly Play classes.  The children gather outside the classroom. As they are ready, they will be invited one-at-a-time, to go inside and build their community. They will experience the Circle of the Church Year and then have some time to respond freely through art materials or by using the story materials themselves. After that, they’ll once again come together as a group to share a feast and perhaps even their responses with each other. As their parents arrive, they will go forth for worship.

We follow the liturgical cycle of the church year in Godly Play just as it’s done in “big church” through color and story, especially during Advent and Lent, the “getting ready” times. We are so looking forward to seeing everyone, and are proud and excited to bring this wonderful program to St. Anne‘s

What is
GODLY  PLAY?
Godly PlayTM is a method of Christian education and spiritual direction primarily for children ages 2-12.  The goal of Godly PlayTM is to teach children the art of using religious language - parable, sacred story, silence, and liturgical action — to help them become more fully aware of God’s presence in their lives.
Godly PlayTM stems from Maria Montessori’s work as a physician and educator in the early part of the 20th century. It has been developed and classroom tested for more than thirty years by an Episcopal priest, The Reverend Dr. Jerome W. Berryman, a fourth-generation person standing in that tradition.
The Godly PlayTM method is currently being used in churches of many denominations throughout the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Finland, Canada, Africa, and Asia.

The Center for the Theology of Childhood in Houston, Texas, provides the commuinity, research, writing and training for Godly PlayTM.  In a time when spirituality has become a fad, the Center stands for depth, tradition, and a focus on the classical language by which Christian People make meaning in life and death. Our play-based approach involves people in the serious and deep play through which children and adults become more creative and mature.
