The John Thomas Walker House
“I think I witnessed a miracle. I know I saw a tremendous act of faith.” These words of a reporter describe the frosty February night of 1990 when the Robey Miles house was moved though the streets of Damascus led by a wooden cross carried by our rector and many residents of Damascus singing hymns. At 4 a.m. on Ash Wednesday the journey ended at St. Anne’s property where the house became the John Thomas Walker House for families at risk of homelessness.
Since that eventful night, seven families have lived at the Walker House. They have received counseling, support in accessing training to increase job skills, assistance in setting financial and family goals and attaining them, and moving into suitable housing. Two families have been able to purchase and move into their own homes as a result of living at the JTW House. Families may stay in the JTW House for up to two years or three, if the additional year will ensure they can achieve their goals.
On August 28, 2007, another family moved into the JTW House. We welcome them most warmly and hope that their new life in our community will be a happy and rewarding one. |
